One of my favorite things about music festivals is discovering new artists. Even before the official kick off of the music portion, I discovered Charli XCX. And I’m not alone in thinking this. There was a line out the door at The Belmont for her first show of the SXSW 2013 Music Festival. This British phenomenon is a true performer, taking music back the bare bones with her live performances.
Fuse TV named her one of the 30 must-see artists at SXSW, and Rolling Stone named her one of their top 20. Rolling Stone describes her sound as “twisty, gleaming synth-pop,” and I definitely agree.
Though she is only 20, she has already recorded several albums including, “14,” “You’re the One,” “True Romance.” “True Romance” is set to release in April 2013. Her music can best be described as a little bit of M.I.A mixed with Robyn with just a sprinkling of Amy Winehouse.
Charli XCX is no stranger to the SXSW scene, as she performed at last year’s festival. Here are some of her upcoming 2013 SXSW performances:
March 13: Hype Machine’s Hype Hotel
March 13: Paradigm Showcase
March 14: Filter Magazine’s Showdown on Cedar St.
March 14: IAMSOUND / MFG SXSW Party
March 15: Urban Outfitters Event
March 16: ASOS Music Lounge
March 17: Perez Hilton’s One Night in Austin
If her first performance was an indication of the crowd to expect, plan on arriving to the show extra early to catch her live.
