Miss A Columnist

Amanda Ivarra is a graduate of Texas A&M University. After graduating with a degree in Health, she moved to Austin and started working for a national non-profit organization. She spent 5 years coordinating community events and programs. After leaving the organization, she started to focus on her creative pursuits. Currently, she is working on developing her own jewelry line. Writing has always been a hobby for Amanda. For most of her life, she’s kept journals. It wasn’t until recently that she decided to take her writing public and began blogging and guest blogging. The one thing this girl can’t live without is music. Not really one to sing or play an instrument, she just loves music. Perhaps, it’s the songwriting that she admires so much or a good beat that she can dance to. Whether she’s attending a concert with friends, hanging out with the guys watching sports, volunteering in the community, hiking or visiting the newest places in town, Amanda lives to enjoy life. But, nothing brings more joy to her than being able to make someone smile or laugh!

Boot Campaign To Host Friends With Benefits Party During SXSW 2013

SXSW is a great opportunity to gather with like-minded individuals.  It’s a time to meet up with old friends and make new ones.  In fact, the Boot Campaign and their friends—many of them actors and musicians participating in this year’s festival—will reunite to bring you and your friends a night of music and goodwill.

The Boot Campaign will host its first-ever party during SXSW on Tuesday, March 12th at Peckerheads, down on Austin’s famed 6th St.  It’ll be an intimate concert experience featuring performances by Cody Canada, Sunny Sweeney, Aaron Watson, Sons of Fathers, Six Market Blvd, Midnight River Choir, The Rankin Twins and other surprise guests!

“It’s intended to be something very different from the rest of the SXSW events that are going on,” says Meghan McDermott, spokesperson for the Boot Campaign.  “It’s going to be very intimate, and of course, it has a give back to a charity that’s helping our servicemen and women.  Come out and have a good time.”

In addition to live music on two stages, “Friends With Benefits” will also include a raffle, and Wild Turkey and Shiner Beers will be the featured beverages of the night, with a portion of your drink purchases being donated back to the Boot Campaign.

The Boot Campaign is a patriotic movement that encourages everyone to “get their boots on.”  By wearing combat boots just like our servicemen and women, everyone can show their appreciation for our troops, cultivate awareness of the challenges they face upon their return and raise funds for military programs meeting the physical and emotional needs of our heroes.

Through the sale of its signature military combat boots, general public donations and corporate sponsorship, the Boot Campaign operates five distinct programs—Jobs, Housing, Family Support, Urgent Assistance and Wellness.  These programs focus on caring for military personnel, past and present, healing from a variety of physical and emotional combat wounds, embodying the campaign motto that, “When They Come Back, We Give Back.”

The organization’s goal is to see 1.4 million Americans with their boots on thanking 1.4 million active duty military serving in 150 countries globally and stateside.

“The performers on the bill have all gotten their boots on and have expressed their gratitude for our troops through the campaign,” says McDermott.  “Now, with them in town for the conference, they’re donating their time to be a part of this benefit concert.”

For several years, the Boot Campaign has been crossing their fingers and hoping that they would be able to do something during SXSW.  With the support of KOKE-FM, Wild Turkey, Peckerheads, Rawhide and Velvet, Shiner Beers and Stage It, this is the year for it!

Doors open at 7 p.m. with your “Friends With Benefits” hosts Rita Ballou of Rawhide and Velvet and Eric Raines and Drew Bennett of KOKE-FM.

For those who cannot attend, the Boot Campaign is partnering with KOKE-FM and Stage It to offer a live radio broadcast and online video stream of the concert.  Details on how to watch and listen will be posted on KOKE-FM’s website and the Boot Campaign’s website.
