Austin’s 9th Annual That Takes the Cake! Sugar Art Show To Benefit Capital Area Food Bank

During the last weekend in February, the 9th Annual That Takes the Cake! Sugar Art Show and Cake Competition will occur at the North Lamar Events Center.

Hosted by Capital Confectioners, the weekend will feature pieces designed to reflect the year’s theme,  “Cake to the Air: All Clear for Cake-Off!”  Pieces will be soaring the new heights, featuring anything that flies: airplanes, birds, butterflies or even hot air balloons.

Kyla Myers, President of Capital Confectioners – the local club that hosts the event – agreed that the show has a global reach. “Competitors, instructors, and guests come from all over the world every year to join us because our show not only has a reputation for magnificent edible creations, but also for down-home Austin hospitality.”

A portion of the proceeds of “That Takes The Cake!” is used to fund scholarships for local culinary students. Also, guests that bring a non-perishable food item for Capital Area Food Bank will save $1 off at-the-door entry price.

While the general admission ticket gets you into the event, there are a variety of classes guests can purchase, so they can learn how to make unique cakes and sugar sculptures.  For the chocolate lovers, there is a Small Furry Chocolate Animals figurine class; for the fashionista, there is the Designer High Heel Shoe cake; and for the Longhorn, there’s a class on how to make a model of the UT Tower.  Online registration ends on February 15 for the classes. The big competitions at the event are the Cake Club Challenge on Saturday, and the Speed Wedding Cake competition on Sunday.
