Miss A Columnist

Agaat Den Hertog, Miss A's mother, is a native of The Netherlands and lives in a small town outside of Charlotte, NC. Before she moved to the United States, she worked as the designer for a major Dutch Children's clothing line. She traveled to Paris, Milan, London and other major European cities looking for new ideas, yarns and colors for the collections. She started making clothing when she was still a child and organized a children's fashion show at her friend's birthday party for the adults.

Agaat's new passion in life is traveling — there isn't a continent that she hasn't explored. When she is home she enjoys spending time in Charlotte, exploring all that the city has to offer.

New World Olive Oil In Charlotte

new world olive oilStep into the world of olive oil! At Charlotte’s New World Olive Oilyou will be introduced to many flavors of this rich cooking staple. The shop opened its doors in July of last year and business is booming.

When you walk into the store, you are struck by the modern space, which is balanced with impeccable taste. The proprietor, Chris Reilly, makes many trips to California to find the best of the best. He may visit 20 different farms to select his favorites to carry at the store.

New world Olive Oil carries 14 different oils and 10 vinegars. I tasted the Millers Blend which is made from 3 different olives, the Arbosana, the Arbequina and the Koroniki. It is delightful and its taste lingers. Next I tried the Lime Fused Oil, which is crushed with lime during the milling process, and the same goes for the Basil Flavor Oil. The oils are kept in stainless steel containers and bottled to order on the spot to ensure freshness. They are both delicious and will add a new dimension of flavor to one’s cooking.

For the vinegars, I recommend the 25 year old Balsamic vinegar from Modena, Italy. It is so delicious that a piece of bread with a touch of Millers Blend oil and a sprinkle of balsamic vinegar becomes a delicacy. The rice vinegars are light and delicate. There are several to try including the Light Peach, the Orange, the Blackberry, the Roasted Pepper and the Island Spice, which is spicy and will make a very good marinade.

New World also sells jars of Caramelized garlic and Dijon Garlic from a Seattle-based company. Both are fabulous. In addition to these products, they carry sauces from Terrapin Ridge Farms. I tasted and bought several. On Saturdays, there is a nice display and one can sample all the products in the store.
