Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop In Austin

Walking into Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, Austin’s only old fashioned cupcake shop, there is an immediate sense of hominess.  With unique dessert names from the Marilyn Monroe to the James Brown, and Elvis to Peppermint Patty, Sugar Mama’s pays homage to the 50s and 60s.

Sugar Mama’s began with owner, Olivia O’Neal’s desire to own her own business. With her love for baking at the top of her list, she ventured to Austin with her husband from San Diego, and soon opened Sugar Mama’s.

From holding contests to letting groups rent out the newly expanded space, there is a definite sense of community at Sugar Mama’s, and this is something they pride themselves on.  Olivia loves that many of her regulars walk to the bakery for their daily treats.  Sugar Mama’s regular, Paul Alvarado-Dykstra, recently got further involved when won a cupcake contest. He created and named the “Paul’s Nuts and Berries,” a strawberry cake with hazelnut buttercream and strawberry jam on top. This cupcake is now featured on the Thursday menu.

Besides her customers, Olivia also gives back to the community through donations.  Because of her love for animals and children, she has worked with Austin’s Children’s Shelter, Austin Pets Alive! and Emancipet, just to name a few. They will also be helping out at Emancipet’s Valentine’s Day fundraisier this year. Another non-profit they are heavily involved in is Project Transition, and this was their fourth year at Project Transitions’ Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, Olivia and her team are already preparing for their busiest day. The menu has a little bit of everything.  From cupcakes to strawberries to conversation heart sugar cookies and pies, there will definitely be something there for that special someone in your life.
