For ten years now the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon in New York’s Central Park has attracted crowds of women runners and walkers to the city, serving as the largest women-only race of its kind nationwide. This year is no exception, and the magazines expect more than 10,000 participants to take part in the 13.1-mile race on April 14, 2013 that will benefit The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Due to its popularity and the participant cap, interested runners (or joggers or even walkers) of all ages are encouraged to register early via the New York Road Runners (NYRR) website. The NYRR, a c0-host for the 10th Anniversary race, is often referred to as the world’s premier community running organization and is made up of passionate NYC runners who seek to empower everyone to improve their health and well-being through the power of running and fitness. By putting on races like the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon, the runners association raises millions of dollars annually for charity and is able to provide youth fitness programs for more than 100,000 children living in underserved communities here in Manhattan and across the world.
Each year More and FITNESS magazines select a charitable partner to donate race proceeds to. The 2013 charitable partner, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, is a nonprofit, residential summer camp and year-round center dedicated to providing “a different kind of healing” to seriously ill children and their families, free of charge. It’s a community that celebrates the fun, friendship and spirit of childhood. Through summer sessions and family weekend programs at the Camp in Ashford, Conn., and year-round outreach to hospitals and clinics throughout the Northeast, the Camp serves more than 20,000 children and family members annually. Every woman in attendance at the half-marathon will have the opportunity to give back and make a donation to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp during race registration. In addition, registrants can opt to run on behalf of “Team Hole in the Wall” to raise money directly for the charity and its programs. If you are interested in running with Team Hole in the Wall, please register directly with The Hole in the Wall Gang by visiting their website here.
Race weekend will kick off on April 12 and April 13 with a two-day Health & Wellness Expo at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues) where women can participate in various health-oriented activities, pick up their race-day gear (runners’ bags and bibs), and talk firsthand with More and FITNESS magazine editors and running experts. The expo is free to the public and will feature health screenings, fitness seminars, food and product sampling, shopping, sweepstakes and more. In keeping with the race’s women empowerment theme, attendees will have the chance to donate to CARE, a leading humanitarian organization that empowers women around the world to help end global poverty and a partner for this year’s expo. On race day Sunday, supporters and spectators are invited to visit the Sponsor Pavilion to enjoy live music, complimentary samples and sweepstakes while cheering on the fearless (and fierce) women running through Central Park.
