It’s the birthstone for the month of May and the color of Esmeralda’s eyes in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year is emerald–a rich green hue that looks great on all skin types. That means, from January until December, you’ll be hard-pressed not to find this gorgeous green popping up at every department store and boutique from San Diego to Boston.
Though we’re only reached the tail end of January, emerald has already made its presence known in the fashion world. Nina Dobrev, of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, recently rocked an embellished stunner by Monique Lhuillier at the Critic’s Choice Movie Awards, and Access Hollywood correspondent Shaun Robinson sported a sequined strapless design by Pamella Roland at last Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
So honor emerald’s “Color of the Year” title by incorporating it into your wardrobe this year. Pair this gorgeous green with a pair of light denim or white jeans as we head into Spring. Emerald tops look great when tucked into a grey or tan pencil skirt or when worn loose over a pair of skinny jeans. Freshen up your closet with any of the options below.
Adorn your lower half with this gemstone shade by picking up a pair of green trousers or skirt. Combine either with a simple white button-down or a festive floral pattern.
Take a cue from Nina and Shaun (photographed above) and swap out your little black dress for a cocktail frock in a sassy shade of emerald. Accessorize with a stack of gold bangles and a fierce pair of black stilettos.
Ever since Angelina Jolie wore those stunning emerald drop earrings offset by her full-length black gown at the 2009 Academy Awards, I have fallen for the trend of allowing the striking hue of deep green make a statement with a simple little black dress or even a little white dress come summertime.
Get a similar look this year with one of these options:
Kim Kardashian sported a gorgeous emerald and diamond Lorraine Schwartz creation around her neck last September. Pair a similar version with a strapless gown and turn heads at your next special event.
As the proud owner of a pair of emerald peep toe pumps, I can testify to the magic of donning your own pair of green-colored footwear. Make an outfit pop with a pair of green shoes in a heel of any height.
Finally, gather all of your essentials and toss them into an emerald tote while running around town during the day, or keep your lipstick, ID and cash secure in a green-colored clutch on an evening out.
2013 will have you seeing green–not with envy but with emerald. So get yourself some green this year and make Pantone proud!
