On Friday, January 11, Rent the Runway and Living Social hosted their first ever pop-up showroom in Washington D.C. Rent the Runway is the ingenious website that allows anyone to rent high fashion dresses or accessories for a special occasion. With apparel by over 170 designers, the site has something for everyone. This event was an amazing mix of designer fashions, champagne and cupcakes: a perfect combination for any girls night out.
Starting off at the bustling Living Social bar, guests were treated to a glass of champagne to get their shopping started off right. Heading up to the showroom, the girls could talk to stylists from Rent the Runway to help narrow down exactly what they were looking for.
Stylist Jocelyn Buckley spoke about what tended to be popular with the girls, and that “any dress with a little sparkle was always a hit with shoppers” since Rent the Runway customers only get their dress for one special occasion. When it comes to trends for this season, Jocelyn said that “anything with lace is on trend, as well as anything with embellishments and detailing.” She also said one other thing to look for this season were sleeves, especially shift dresses with long sleeves, as they are very popular for winter.
The showroom was filled with women out with their friends and looking for that perfect dress. Included in the price of admission was a 50% discount towards any online Rent the Runway rental, making the dress search that much more enticing. The space offered racks and racks of designer wear to try on, as well as iPads throughout the room to make online orders.
Attendee Saray Landeros said that although she was not looking for anything in particular, she was just excited to get to try on dresses by different designers. For Saray, the event was a success as she “found the perfect dress! The London Eye Gown by Issa.” She said that she “now has the dress and she just needs an event to wear it to!” That is one of the great things about this event, Issa is a British brand favored by Duchess Kate Middleton, but thanks to Rent the Runway, girls in D.C. are able to wear it as well.
An exciting part of the evening were the dresses that had been worn by First Lady Michelle Obama and Duchess Kate Middleton. The Kate Spade dress that Michelle Obama wore during the National Democratic Convention was available for women to try on, while the Prabal Gurung dress worn by the Duchess was present to admire. Many of the girls were overheard saying that their first priority was definitely trying on the dress worn by the first lady just to be able to say they had, which was quite fitting for a Washington D.C. event.
The event was a success and went smoothly with every detail handled in a way to make the evening a relaxed and enjoyable time for guests. Landeros said she had a great time because the event was “not too crowded and did not have to wait too long to try on dresses.” With her only complaint being that she wished there had been more dresses to try on, but that concluding the festivities “at the Living Social bar was the perfect way to end the evening.” The Living Social bar was packed with people on this rainy night and gave a young, fresh vibe to the building. The stylists from Rent the Runway were extremely gracious with their time and knowledge, and were only too happy to help the guests. It was the perfect way to spend time with friends and find a fabulous dress for that next special evening.
