Every now and again, the Arts combine in a fresh, modern way that reminds us once again of the relevance, beauty and just plain fun that can be had at the Dallas Opera. On February 9, 2013, The Dallas Opera will host a special two engagement only performance of Lee Hoiby’s Bon Appetit!, a rarely performed modern work at the Dallas Farmers Market Demonstration Kitchen. Performed in English by celebrated mezzo-soprano, Susan Nicely, fresh from last season’s Verdi’s La Traviata and libretto Mark Shulgasser, this “witty and warm” featurette feels as fabulous as one of Julia Child‘s decadent chocolate cakes. The one-act operetta tells the story of Julia through two episodes of her famed culinary classic and celebrates the twentieth century icon in a unique format that is drawing excited buzz and whispers of delight of foodies and arts lovers alike.
First performed at the Kennedy Center in 1989, Bon Appetit! allows audiences to suspend reality and pretend for a little while to be members of the famed “French Chef’s” studio audience and take part of new experience fusion of the culinary in the arts. In just one more instance of a the new inclusive direction of the expansion of programs at the Dallas Opera; this is a show that you’ll not want to miss.
