The end of “The Hills” in May 2010 was the end of a scripted reality TV era in America. There has not been any sort of substantial replacement. Thankfully, our friends across the pond got with the program and “Made in Chelsea” was born in 2011 and this fall Style Network picked it up.
“Made in Chelsea” follows the lives of a handful of upper crust British socialites from Chelsea. The show is filmed all over London as well as the British countryside and sometimes it even follows the group as the globe trot from country to country. While the scenery is wonderful it the drama between the socialites that sucks a viewer in.
Catherine Dunlop, also known as “Caggie”, is the LC of “Made in Chelsea” while Spencer Matthews is the British equivalent of Brody Jenner. These two are leaders of the stylish and affluent Chelsea pact. Francis Boulle, author and one of the heirs to the Boulle diamond fortune, Rosie Fortescue, London fashion blogger, Ollie Locke (VIP nightclub host) and Gabriella Ellis (singer) and Millie Mackintosh (make-up artist) are just a small handful of others that also play pivotal rolls in this London drama.
While fabulous parties, luxurious stores and restaurants are littered throughout every episode it is the love triangles that keep one coming back for more. Caggie has had her eye on Spencer for years, but until midway through Season 1, much to her dismay, he has been tied down. Like any good reality show, the two are unsure how to move forward, which of course, leaves someone with a broken heart. Millie and Rosie fight for the same man and even after one of them concedes, the other still feels threatened. Other cast members question their sexuality and in doing so decide to branch out. “Made in Chelsea” certainly does not lack love!
Though we are several seasons behind on this side of the Atlantic, “Made in Chelsea” is a must-watch for any reality TV lover. The show covers all the bases and always leaves you anxious for the next episode.
The Verdict: If you liked “The Hills” then be sure to set your DVR for “Made in Chelsea.” Much like “The Hill’s” did in L.A., “Made in Chelsea” lets you peek into the closed world of affluent young adults in London. All it is missing is an appearance from Prince Harry or Pippa Middleton!
