An upcoming holiday stroll through Austin’s 2nd Street District will fill your spirit with childhood memories and holiday merriment. Theatrical design students from the University of Texas at Austin, St. Edward’s University and Texas State University will compete this month to create the best window displays during this year’s Holiday Window Walk.

It’s been a meticulous selection process, but the finalists have been chosen and will now create their designs for the public to admire between Saturday, December 8, 2012 and Wednesday, January 2, 2013. With a $500 budget and a requirement that the window display must incorporate this year’s theme—Classic Children’s Books and Fairy Tales, design students are competing to win one of three scholarships awarded by Silicon Labs.
“This year’s holiday walk is a great way to provide the community with another way to enjoy the holidays and gives us a chance to give back to the students who participate in the event,” says Shannon Pleasant, vice-president of Corporate Communications at Silicon Labs.
The competition affords participating students widespread exposure, an incredible portfolio showpiece and the chance at one of three prizes: $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000 in scholarships.
“We are thrilled to host the competition with Silicon Labs,” says Julie Sutton-McGurk, 2nd Street District Retail Marketing Director. “The event has strengthened our community, offered both residents and visitors public art and contributed to the magical atmosphere of the season.”

On Saturday, December 15, 2012, the public is invited to celebrate the season with 2nd Street District’s specialty shops, services and dining destinations. Deck the District, a free and family-friendly event, will include seasonal goodies from participating retailers, photos with Santa, carolers and performers spreading some holiday cheer and, of course, a chance to see the competing window designs. “Celebrity judges” will also be hand to select the winning designs and award scholarships.
