Miss A Columnist

Sarah McLaughlin recently moved to Philadelphia from Durham, North Carolina, where she has been pursuing a doctorate in English literature from Duke University for the past four years. An arts and culture enthusiast, Sarah is thrilled to have an opportunity to explore Philadelphia’s rich historic enclaves as well as the city’s phenomenal collection of public art. While at Duke, Sarah studied the intersections between the arts and sciences, focusing specifically on how artists have historically worked to express humanity’s relationship to the natural world. As she reports on her ventures through the city, Sarah hopes to offer an environmental perspective on the city’s many cultural, artistic and charitable events.

Some of the best things in life come in small packages, which is the theme of Fleisher Art Memorial’s Dear Fleisher annual postcard-sized art exhibition and fundraiser. This Sunday, November 4, Fleisher will be auctioning off postcard-sized works by hundreds of local artists. Ranging broadly in both style and medium, these works will be sold anonymously at $50 per work on a first-come-first-served basis. The artist’s anonymity reflects Fleisher’s interest in promoting the merits of works in and of themselves, encouraging buyers to put aside preconceptions about art and experience the works on their own.

Proceeds from Dear Fleisher will go toward Fleisher’s nationally recognized and award-winning arts education programs. These programs make art available to a variety of communities that may not be exposed to art or may not have the means to provide access to expensive artistic materials. Since the original Dear Fleisher in 2004, the exhibition has featured over 2,000 works by 800 artists and raised over $150,000. Fleisher hopes that this year will bring equal success thanks to supporters of the arts in Philadelphia.

In addition to the postcard sized works, guests are also encouraged to enjoy the regular works on exhibit at Fleisher, including many works done by students in the education program. There will be a raffle at the Preview Party with works generously donated by artists Giovanni Casadei, Diane Burko, Paul Dusold and Michelle Ortiz.
