Miss A Columnist

Amanda Ivarra is a graduate of Texas A&M University. After graduating with a degree in Health, she moved to Austin and started working for a national non-profit organization. She spent 5 years coordinating community events and programs. After leaving the organization, she started to focus on her creative pursuits. Currently, she is working on developing her own jewelry line. Writing has always been a hobby for Amanda. For most of her life, she’s kept journals. It wasn’t until recently that she decided to take her writing public and began blogging and guest blogging. The one thing this girl can’t live without is music. Not really one to sing or play an instrument, she just loves music. Perhaps, it’s the songwriting that she admires so much or a good beat that she can dance to. Whether she’s attending a concert with friends, hanging out with the guys watching sports, volunteering in the community, hiking or visiting the newest places in town, Amanda lives to enjoy life. But, nothing brings more joy to her than being able to make someone smile or laugh!

Putting On The Ritz Gala To Benefit Austin Children’s Shelter

This year’s gala presented by Austin Children’s ShelterPutting on the Ritz is expected to bring as much glitz and glam as the Art Deco Era did. Featuring prohibition inspired cocktails, a specialty cigar lounge, 1931 vintage cars, an entertaining burlesque show by Mandy Lauderdale and the sounds of the era by the Nash Hernandez Orchestra, it sounds like it’s going to be a roaring good time!

On Saturday, November 3, over 700 of the organization’s most generous donors will celebrate the elegance and style of the 1920s and 1930s while raising half a million dollars for abused and neglected children. The gala will take place at the Hilton Austin Hotel and will transport guests back in time to the era that inspired The Great Gatsby.  Guests will also have the opportunity to mingle with legends of their time—Charlie Chaplin, Mae West and Al Capone.

“’Putting on the Ritz’ celebrates a time of great hope and growth in America—the same kind of hope we try to instill in the children and youth we serve at the Austin Children’s Shelter,” said Kelly White, CEO of ACS. “We believe in celebration, fun, renewal and hope for the children and youth we serve, all valiant survivors of childhood abuse and neglect. Please join us and all of our wonderful sponsors, guests and volunteers as we celebrate and raise essential dollars that make our work possible.”

Eighty-five percent of the money raised by Austin Children’s Shelter goes directly to providing critical care and services such as medical treatment, group and individual counseling, psychiatric services, academic support and recreational activities for the 50 youth who call the Shelter home at any given time. The goal for this year’s event is $500,000—crucially important dollars to support the Shelter’s mission given that approximately two-thirds of the Shelter’s funding comes from philanthropic sources, including events, private donations and grants.
