A former Austin contributor, Crystal graduated from the University of Texas at Austin (hook ‘em!) with degrees in Government and Communication Studies and a minor in Rhetoric & Writing. She loves writing so that she can share knowledge with and encourage others to pursue more opportunities to learn as well. The best time to go shopping for the winter season this year starts on the weekend of Saturday, November 10. It’s the perfect chance for you to jump-start getting into the spirit of giving before the holiday season! Until November 18, Canstruction Austin will be putting extravagant sculptures made completely out of canned food on display at Barton Creek Square Mall. And for $1 per person, you can vote for your favorite masterpiece!

Canstruction Inc. is a nonprofit organization that has been fighting hunger around the world since 1992. The organization has adopted the phrase, “One Can®” because building their sculptures “starts with one can” and so does fighting hunger. And since its inception, it has donated over 17.5 million pounds of food to community food banks.

In various cities every year, Canstruction holds competitions for teams led by architects, engineers and builders and gives them the opportunity to show off their skills by constructing sculptures using canned food. The winning sculptures are then put on for display as art exhibits for the public to enjoy and to be reminded “to feed the hungry, to lift the spirit, [and] to change the world.” For the Canstruction Austin exhibit at Barton Creek Square Mall, the food cans used in the sculptures are donated to our local food bank, Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, at the end of every exhibit.

So come on out to the mall from November 10-18 to start taking care of your holiday gift list and to stop by to marvel at these unique sculptures for fighting hunger!
