5th Annual Dogtoberfest In Austin

What started out as a one-time fundraiser by friends Julie Strong and Stan Parish has become an amazing day-long celebration of local dog rescue organizations, as well as Austin-based pet-related businesses.

On October 20, the fifth annual Dogtoberfest will occur at The Domain. This year also marks the first year for the DogtoberTROT, a 1K around Domain Phase II made just for dogs. The DogtoberTROT is sponsored by Fit Dog Austin, a dog/human boot camp, where dogs and their owners can get fit while having fun together.

The event will also feature hourly demonstrations, dachshund races, a silent auction, photos taken at the Neiman Marcus photo booth with a $5 donation and the annual Canine Costume Contest.

For the costume contest, the canines will compete in different categories, including “Best Owner/Dog Duo” and “Best Super Hero.” Judges include KXAN anchors. Another first this year, the actual contest will be emceed by KXAN’s Brian Sanders.

Dogtoberfest is an Austin non-profit organization, created to instill awareness about dog rescue, as well as raise money for local dog rescue organizations. Last year approximately 5,000 people and their canine companions attended this one day event.

This year, Dogtoberfest will benefit Austin Boxer RescueAustin German Shepherd Rescue, Ay Chihuahua Rescue, Pug Rescue Austin, Austin Dog Rescue, Austin Sheltie Rescue, Hound Rescue and Wee Rescue.

The fest gives local dog businesses the opportunity to showcase their services while raising money for a worthy cause. With the support of the community last year, Dogtoberfest donated back $25,700 to the rescue groups.

For three years now, Dogtoberfest has been voted “Most Awesome-ist Pet Related Event,” in the Austin Pet Director annual reader’s poll.
