Miss A Columnist

Aimee Landreneau-deTurk is Co-Editor for Miss A in New Orleans. She currently works at Tulane University as a contract specialist, and writes a personal blog, www.gratisNOLA.com, about all things “FREE” in the City. Needless to say, when she’s not at work Aimee is out and about enjoying everything the City has to offer, culinary and cocktail delights, art openings, live music, and of course festivals. Aimee loves festivals, and attends the New Orleans Jazz Fest all seven days. She is also a huge fan of all things Mardi Gras, and wouldn’t think about missing a single parade. Luckily, Aimee’s husband feels the same way, so they were married on the first day of Carnival season in the heart of the French Quarter. The wedding was Mardi Gras themed, of course! If you have a New Orleans charity or cultural event, restaurant, boutique, spa, or salon you would like covered on Miss A, please contact Aimee at aimee.landreneau-deturk@askmissa.com.

PJ’s Coffee Contest Winner Donates Prize To Benefit Louisiana Youth Group

In these crazy times it’s always wonderful to hear a heart warming story. Lafayette native and New Orleans resident Kristin Davis was perusing Facebook, as we all do, when she came across a contest where PJ’s Coffee lovers were able to suggest the next flavor. The New Orleans-based company received responses running the gamut from blueberry cobbler to pumpkin pie, but Davis’ Chocolate Truffle was the top choice. The new blend hit PJ’s Coffee this August.

In return for her idea, Davis received the ultimate prize package for coffee fans: a behind-the-scenes tour of PJ’s’ roasting facility and a year’s supply of PJ’s Coffee. During her tour, Davis was able to work with PJ’s roastmaster, Felton Jones, to bring her flavor to life.

Now you may say, well that’s really wonderful for Kristin, but I wish I would have won. Well, the lovely part of this story is Kristin requested that the money PJ’s would spend on the year supply of coffee be donated to the Louisiana Youth Seminar, a week-long leadership experience designed for high school students. This generous donation allowed five students who may not have otherwise been able to afford this enriching experience to attend. Louisiana Youth Seminar teaches students leadership and communication skills and gives them the self-confidence that is needed in order to enact positive change and become leaders of a community. This charity is especially close to Kristin’s heart because she attended the conference, was a program counselor and now serves on the Executive Committee.

Davis graduated from LSU in 2010 with a degree in psychology, where she was also declared the 2010 LSU Homecoming Queen. She currently studies at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and aspires to become an occupational therapist.
