Harlem’s Independent Film House, Maysles Cinema Launches Fall Programs For Children

Located in Harlem, the Maysles Cinema is the only independent film house north of the Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

Part of the Maysles Institute, the cinema provides independent film exhibitions as well as forums and discussions often attended by the directors of the films being screened. The Institute has forged partnerships with organizations such as The National Black Programming Consortium, the New Museum and the Harlem Historic Parks Association, to name a few. As well as providing films for adults, the cinema also has two film clubs geared toward children this autumn. The World Cinema Club will be open to children ages 7 to 11 this fall. The club runs from September 30 to December 16 from 10 a.m. to noon.

As an activity that takes place on Sunday mornings, participants watch international children’s films in a dynamic, active environment. Films vary from documentary to fiction and are punctuated by complimentary popcorn and stimulating conversation. Kids learn how to think critically about what they’re watching, but also manage to have fun while dissecting the art of film. International titles give kids an interest in, and appreciation of, other cultures and provide something more stimulating than most standard films geared towards children.

For an even younger crowd, Film Voyagers is a film program for children ages 3 to 7 that allows parents to get in on the action. Also occurring on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. starting September 30, this club is available for kids and their parents to enjoy together. Films (mostly cartoons) from Japan, France, Germany and a host of other countries will be shown. And, as usual, organic popcorn will be provided. Each program at the Cinema means to expose kids to different cultures and appreciate them. As the summer comes to a close in NYC, families can still enjoy a fun collective experience at the Cinema.
