An estimated 3 million Americans suffer from Celiac disease, an autoimmune digestive disease. Because of the broad range of symptoms Celiac disease presents, it can be difficult to diagnose and only around 200,000 are diagnosed accurately. To raise awareness and funds for Celiac disease, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) is hosting the 8th annual Appetite for Awareness, a gluten-free food festival.
The event takes place on Sunday, September 23 from 1-5 p.m. at the Historic Strawbridge Building in Philadelphia. Appetite for Awareness will feature chef demos from Nicole Hunn of Gluten-Free on a Shoestring, Gianluca Demontis of Melograno and raw food expert Joel ODhner of Jar Bar. Physicians and chefs from prominent Philadelphia-area restaurants including Alma de Cuba, BIBOU [BYOB], Rouge and Spiga will participate in the delicious and healthy “Gluten-Free Cooking Spree.”
Additionally featured, a Gluten-Free Beer Garden with flat screen TVs so you won’t miss the Eagles vs. the Cardinals; a Children’s Pavilion with kid-friendly, gluten-free food and family activities; and the chance to win a one-year Mercedes-Benz lease.
Appetite for Awareness raises funds to support NFCA’s healthcare education programs, food safety initiatives and free patient resources. Through education, empowerment and advocacy, the NFCA drives diagnoses of Celiac disease and helps improve the quality of life for those on a lifelong gluten-free diet. This year NFCA will honor Michael Savett, founder of Gluten Free Philly, for his significant contribution to quality-of-life for those on a gluten-free diet within the Philadelphia region.
