One t-shirt that should have been sold at the District Sample Sale (DSS) benefitting Sitar Arts Center is “ She shops and He carries.” This creative suggestion came courtesy of brave male District Sample Sale attendee, Wolfgang Koehling, who accompanied his lady, Tania Taylor, to this uniquely exciting charity sale on Tuesday, September 11.
After five short years of existence, the DSS, held this year at Mazza Gallerie, has become the premiere fashion event in the city.
Event Founders Liberty Jones, Barbara Martin, Jayne Sandman, Shannon Haley and Mary Amons run an all-volunteer shop ensuring that 100 percent of all proceeds help the chosen charities of the event. Since 2006, more than $266,000 has been donated to these charities. This year’s event along with its silent auction is hoping to bring that total close to $300,000.
Elegant and trendy participating stores and boutiques hailed from both Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. These generous establishments included Julia Farr, Lettie Gooch, Tabandeh, Imagine, Form, Babe, Caramel, Urban Chic and many others.
Fueling the joy of scooping up fashion finds is the job of the refreshment vendors. This mission was more than accomplished courtesy of the delectable tastes including Georgetown Cupcakes, Dolci Gelati,Whole Foods, Rogue States-Burger Grilling Company, Rosa Mexicano, Pinkberry, Kalorama Cookie Company, Ping Pong Dim Sum, and others. We washed down these delights with sparkling water, wine and vodka-infused cocktails courtesy of Martin’s Tavern and Southern Hospitality.

The point of this fun outing is to find the best, must-have fashion finds and socialize with friends while supporting a worthwhile charity. This year’s DSS sale scored on all counts.
