Roll On Sushi In Austin Celebrates One Year Anniversary

Roll on Sushi Diner is celebrating their one-year anniversary with the launch of 15 new items that showcase their unique twist of traditional, yet modern, sushi rolls. The new rolls include The Leslie, Hawaiian Roll, Tempura-rary Fin-sanity Roll, Make it “Rain”bow Roll, The Panther and The Dream Roll.

Brothers Chip and Chad Reed created Roll on Sushi in August 2011 with the goal of offering affordable traditional sushi as well as some creative Austin rolls. Rolls start at only $4. For their anniversary this past weekend, the Roll On team created a roll to benefit the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). Ten percent of sales from August 18 are going to be donated to HAAM, including the created for the occasion HAAM roll. The roll is made of pulled pork, pepperjack cheese, chipotle cole slaw, avocado, rice and topped with Roll On BBQ sauce.

When I visited to try some of the newer menu items, I started with the Fire Sticks for my starter and they were amazing! Imagine Asian style mozzarella sticks. The sticks are made of tempura and panko fried pepper jack cheese topped with spicy aioli, unagi and house pico de gallo. While, yes, they were fried, they felt a lot healthier than similarly-made fried cheese at other restaurants and I loved that they weren’t greasy at all.  The pico de gallo on them was a topping I could never have imagined pairing but so perfect together!

The Leslie, named after Austin icon Leslie Cochran is spicy tuna, soft shell crab and cucumber topped with unagi sauce, Roll On guacamole and Roll On Crunch. Seeing as the roll and I share a name (and even spelled the same way!) I, of course, had to try this one. It was really good, and very filling with the two kinds of fish so I could personally make a meal of just this roll with a starter.

Roll On Sushi Elvis Roll

I sampled the Elvis for dessert, which is peanut butter, banana and bacon rolled in a crispy egg roll wrapper served atop chocolate sauce. It was really yummy, but very rich. It’s a good dessert to split and, while sushi places aren’t typically known for offering much in the dessert department, it’s nice to know that Roll On has fun desserts on the menu!

Some of Roll On’s other most popular rolls include The Cholesta Roll, made with mashed potatoes, chicken fried steak and green beans, The Beefy Texan with beef brisket, wasabi cole slaw, avocado and spicy BBQ mayo and the new Half-Baked Californian with cream cheese, krab, avocado, cucumber, caramelized onion and topped with salmon.
