On June 26th, 2012, under the new ownership of the Historic Tours of America, a remodeled and relocated Boston Tea Party Ships Museum finally opened its doors to the public -nearly a decade after the original exhibit caught fire in 2001.  Since opening, visitors from all over the world, including Boston area natives, are flocking to the newly revamped Boston Tea Party Ships Museum, which now proudly boasts two beautifully restored replicas of the fateful whaling ships. The Eleanor and The Beaver are once again docked in Boston Harbor. The museum and cutting edge exhibits work to take visitors on an interactive tour of the events, people, and the repercussions of the night that ultimately led to the American Revolution.

Actors and historians dressed in full colonial garb cast a scene that is inviting, informative, and innovative as they recreate history in the midst of an urban 21st century backdrop, a fact I had to be eloquently reminded of by Tea Party tour guide, Meg. The tour group and I happily traveled back to December 16th,1773, when over 340 chests of the British East Indian Tea Company’s tea was dumped into Boston Harbor…See Mom, I did pay attention! Fun fact, an original tea chest from the Tea Party is on display!

The journey back in time to December 16th, 1773 began from the moment I stepped up to buy my ticket. Perhaps it was the flags, or colonial clad cashiers, or maybe it was the fife and drum music that really tugged at the inner patriot in all of us? All I’ll say is that even the British tourists could not help but join in the rallying cheers lead by Sam Adams and The Sons of Libertyas we made our way along the wharf to dump the tea into the sea…clearly time really does heal all!

Both kids and adults will enjoy the quirky and educational fun as they dump tea into the ocean, listen to and participate in reenactments, watch portraits come alive, and even feel the gusts from militia gunfire as visitors watch the final battle of American Revolutionary War. A word of advice, the best/busiest time to visit is midday but if you are a large party or hoping for a less crowded tour then try joining a morning or late afternoon tour when it is not as busy.
