Grab your four legged friends and head lakeside for a day of splish splashing and tail wagging in the spirit of one of life’s most simple joys: puppies. Austin Subaru has teamed up with Austin Pets Alive! to host Paddle for Puppies, a friendly (and water soaked) competition held in hopes of raising both funds and awareness for the Parvo Puppy Program at Austin Pets Alive! This event kicks off at the Austin American Statesman office and consists of approximately 5 miles of paddling, the course is available here.
What is puppy parvo? Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious, life-threatening virus that infects rapidly dividing cells in a dog’s body, most severely affecting the intestinal tract. Austin Pets Alive! treated 256 dogs in 2011 and achieved an impressive 88% survival rate among infected puppies. The average cost for treatment (per puppy) is $250- an amount funded and supplied by community donations.
Think you and your canine are up for the challenge? Check out their website for additional details and to get signed up.
Participants can use Town Lake approved watercraft for this event: Stand Up Paddle, Kayak, Canoe, Water Bikes, etc. All participants MUST have a personal floatation device (life jacket) and all dogs are encouraged to wear life jackets if they are going to be on watercraft for this event.
