Back To School Donations At Jose Sebourne Art Gallery

Philadelphia school districts are suffering greatly, as we know from recent news. The number of drop outs and lowering test scores in the city each year are staggering. So when I hear about charities that are here to support students and their families who may not be able to afford supplies, I always donate. I realize the importance of donations and awareness especially in Philadelphia.

After all, only  10% of kids who enter Philadelphia public school 9th grade will graduate from college. That is a number that needs to be changed. It is important to understand that the more help the teachers and students get the less pressure it takes off of both parties and it creates more learning time for these students. School supplies help build confidence to students, not having the proper supplies may make them feel as if they are not good enough. Sometimes kids are afraid to ask for these things. I understand that not everyone can donate their time, but small donations are a great help.

On August 18, 2012 at the Jose Sebourne Art Gallery , Le Petite Capella will be hosting their 2nd annual “Back to School” donation drive. The donations will be made to 6 different schools as well as kids and families who are in need of assistance. They realize that a lot of teachers spend 3.5 million out of pocket expenses per year nationally. Schools are unable to pay for materials needed  the  school district of Philadelphia spends $483,084 per classroom of 28 students.  (Calculations based on figures from the SDP  2010-2011 Budget). The Philadelphia school district has threatened to lay off more teachers as a result of being over budget so if we can help to lower the the cost and keep the teachers we should try to do anything in order to better Philadelphia. If you’re unable to make it out to this event please visit their website where you can donate $1 or more.
