Recap: Prestonwood Summer Polo Camp And Interscholastic Polo 2012

By far the most stylish of all sports is Polo! It’s never too early to begin learning the exquisite Sport of Kings and polo lessons are available to both girls and boys starting at age 8. Two camp sessions were held at Prestonwood Polo Club, July 4-7 and July 11-14. Polo Camp is open to students 8-18 whether they have had any riding experience or not. This year’s campers doubled the number of last year’s inaugural camp.

Polo students begin in the barn, learning the difference between polo ponies and ponies used in other equestrian activities and getting familiar with polo equipment. After some mallet work, they learn the game in the arena before taking their skills to the field. Campers cooled off swimming the horses in the pond before lunch and zip line fun. On the final camp day, parents and friends were invited to watch an evening exhibition polo match, which was very exciting! Two teams of beginning players competed and ended in a tie game, while advanced players competed for a very close, thrilling match that had parents cheering in the grandstands.

Prestonwood Polo Club has ongoing Jr. Polo programs as well as adult lessons, both private and group, all year long.

Jr. Polo students work up to being invited to join the Prestonwood Interscholastic Polo Team that competes in the region and hopes to advance to nationals next year. This was the first year for them to compete, and they won every game as well as USPA Best Playing String of Ponies in the first round. Only one team kept them from going to Virginia for nationals, the very seasoned Midland Polo Team with two seniors, while Prestonwood was 7th grader Vaughn Sebastian Miller of Highland Park, Ronnie Puentes of Little Elm and Andrew Garcia of Southlake. Pretty impressive for first time competition!
