A dream collaboration for alternative music fans has come true: music legend David Byrne has teamed up with up-and-coming star St.Vincent for an album and tour. The two artists will come to the Chicago Theatre this fall to promote their upcoming album, “Love This Giant“.
Byrne is no stranger to collaborations with female musicians. The former Talking Heads frontman worked with Tori Amos and Cyndi Lauper on a tribute album to Imelda Marcos, the former shoe-loving leader of the Phillipines. St. Vincent also appeared on that album, which led to the current pairing. St. Vincent (real name: Annie Clark) has built a following with her piercing voice, honest lyrics and impressive guitar work. Byrne’s latest project with her has a more traditional theme, but still has a unique sound.
“Love This Giant” has an eclectic mix of music that matches Byrne’s diverse interests in music, from Afro-beat to Brazilian to R & B. The latest single, ” Who”, has an old-school Al Green-like horn section with a driving drum beat. Vincent’s soothing voice sounds calm compared to Byrne’s nasal, highly-charged singing. The contrast works well, and the album should sound like nothing fans of either artist would expect. Then again, David Byrne and St. Vincent have not reached their levels of success by doing what’s expected. Fans should be in for a treat when they see these two artists at the Chicago Theatre.
