Miss A Columnist

As a 4-year Leukemia survivor, Stacey Mertes is heavily involved in fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the American Diabetes Association. Her 7-year-old son, Logan, is a recently diagnosed Type 1 diabetic, but keeps Stacey on her toes with his own active fundraising endeavors such as the Columbia Tower climb (for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), WaMu stair climb (for Cystic Fibrosis), and several triathlons and other stair climbs around the city. Originally from a suburb of Chicago, Stacey has lived in many of the local neighborhoods (including spending 11 years next to the Pike Place Market), since graduating from the University of Washington. She finally settled down in the most diverse zip code in the country, Columbia City, where she enjoys walks to the many restaurants, farmers market, and art events nearby. Her favorite hobby of late is finding the most fun “free” things to do around Seattle with her son. She loves movies, plays, visiting the Pacific Science Center and other museums, and finding those geocaching adventures. If you have a Seattle charity or cultural event, restaurant, boutique, spa, or salon you would like covered on Miss A, please contact Stacey at staceymertes@gmail.com.

“RENT” is the musical that changed it all, defining a new generation of musical theater fans. Now the 5th Avenue Theater brings Seattle its own new vision for the long-standing hit. This electrifying show comes to life in an emotionally-charged new production, featuring a cast of Seattle’s most thrilling young stars. “RENT” captures the story of impoverished artists and musicians struggling to create their art while living in New York’s East Village.

“The 5th Avenue Theatre has a longstanding tradition of cultivating our fantastic Seattle-based talent pool,” said Executive Producer and Artistic Director David Armstrong. “Many of the stars of ‘RENT’ are performers that you have seen on smaller stages around Seattle. Ten years ago our acclaimed production of ‘Hair’ introduced a vibrant new crop of musical theater artists to Seattle audiences. Many of these performers have gone on to local and national acclaim. With this production, we are poised to do that all over again!”

Fresh from his smash success with “First Date”, Bill Berry directs this electrifying new staging of Jonathan Larson’s modern rock-opera classic. The hit musical premiered in 1996 to instant acclaim, and swept a host of theater awards — the Tony, the Obie and the Pulitzer Prize.

Berry can still recall the first time he saw “RENT” in 1996. “’RENT’ is the musical that defined a brand new generation of theatre-goers, and has since become an anthem of youth, vitality and rebellion. But more than anything, this is a musical about survival, and about embracing every moment as though there will never be another. I think that’s why it has such universal and timeless appeal.”
