I spent this past Saturday at The Spa at The Jefferson, which is only four blocks north of the White House. The hotel was opened in 1923 as an apartment building, and converted into a hotel in 1955. The Milstein family of New York bought the hotel in 2006 and invested a great deal in extensive renovations, reopening the hotel in September of 2009. The hotel is just my taste – a fabulous blend of historic elegance and modern technology and convenience – from antiques, historic documents, old pieces of art, a cozy library, beautiful marble and woodwork to complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and flat screen TVs embedded in the bathroom mirrors.
I started with a body treatment given by Bud Earley. I had the Spring Ritual, a 90 minute energizing Japanese body ritual featuring products from red flower, which also supplies the hotel with custom bath amenities for each guest room. The treatment began with an Ohana Gingergrass Bamboo Scrub which hydrates and replenishes skin and adds amino acids for healthy skin cells. After the scrub, I left the treatment room to enjoy a steam shower to rinse the product off my skin. I found some amazing Darphin body products in the shower which I adored. After drying off and nestling back onto the treatment table, I was treated to a Yuzu Mimosa Sea Algae Wash with essential oils from the rind of the citrus fruit, yuzu. This was to tighten pores and help heal dry skin. This was followed by a buffing with a Wild Cherry Blossom Poultice massage to provide balance and restore energy. The bran is contained in a cute cotton bag which is soaked in warm water. The bag allows the bran oil, which contains amino and fatty acids, to replenish the skin. After the buffing, a Rose Camellia Plum Mist was spritzed over my skin to refresh and revive my senses. This was followed by a Wild Lime Silk Oil Massage and application of Plum Blossom Silk Cream.
The massage was the best part for me. I, of course, had to complete a short form upon arriving at the spa. Mr. Earley noted that I had written ‘hard’ as to my preferred pressure for massage rather than ‘firm’. Mr. Earley has a background in sports massage and deep tissue so he knew exactly how to give me the kind of massage I like. I’m very Type A, and like much in my life, I like my facials and massages to be effective and accomplish something rather than just feel good. I will be back to see him – amazing massage, very professional, comfortable and luxurious setting. I loved it!
After the body treatment, I was treated to an Ultra Hydrating Pedicure with Jai Neal. The Spa at The Jefferson uses SpaRitual products, but I asked Ms. Neal to use my favorite color Essie polish which I had brought with me. She began by shaping my toenails and then using a scrub which is left on and then sort of rolls right off your feet. I soaked my feet in a warm bowl of water, which I prefer to those spa pedicure chairs you see at nail salons at your local strip mall. You never know what sorts of bacteria might be caught up in the pipes of those things! Ms. Neal pushed back my cuticles, scrubbed and lotioned each foot and then put my feet into my flip flops. She did a great job with the polish and then moved me to a cute little sofa to let them dry. She treated me to more of their delicious cucumber citrus water and the most amazing heirloom tomatoes marinaded in a champagne vinaigrette with black olive salt.
I invite you to try the Spa at The Jefferson for yourself. Their menu of massages, facials and body treatments all employ herbs and botanicals grown in Monticello’s gardens, and specialize in vinotherapies that reflect Thomas Jefferson’s passion for wine. Indulge in one yourself, or treat your special someone to discover the pleasures of their beautiful couples treatment room. Their spa treatments feature the highest quality products from red flower, Darphin and Olavie.
