Make shopping fun for the whole family
Going to the grocery store can be a huge hassle and while going to the Farmers Market may take a little extra prep-time, the pay off is worth it! Often times the farmers or artisans run their own booths. This creates a great opportunity for your kids to gain first hand knowledge of how our food gets from seed to table or just how that pasta is made. Also, because each farm and farmer are unique, there is often a larger variety of produce which you probably don’t see in your grocery store.

Learning what grows local to your home creates an awareness that benefits the entire planet! Encourage your kids to ask questions. Make a game out of who can name all the native veggies, or let them pick out a new fruit they have never tried before each week. Make sure you let them know just how local and seasonal produce creates less pollution, is more sustainable and that they are taking part in making that possible just by eating their fresh fruits and veggies. I bet you’ll have a way easier time putting those brussels sprouts on the table.

One stop shop and play
As local markets grow, so do the options. Many markets offer everything from flower arrangements to local meat and eggs and often have booths from local restaurants serving seasonal dishes. Instead of carting your kids around from place to place, the farmers market is a great alternative ”one stop shop” for all your weekend errands. If something is missing from your market, contact the organizers and see if they can bring in a vendor or farmer to fill in the gaps.

Organizing a picnic with all your family friends is a great way to bring everyone together and keep the kids happy while the parents shop. Grab various options of prepared foods, bring along a blanket, pull out a frisbee, and you have an entire day of fun!

Not to mention the satisfaction of feeding your family local and fresh fruits and veggies all week long.

Do’s and Dont’s

  • Do bring your own bags
  • Don’t stress if you forget them. Just like a store, vendors keep plastic produce bags handy for your convenience.
  • Do bring a blanket to sit on if your planning to have lunch
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen!
  • Do bring your own water to sip on throughout the day
  • Don’t worry about bringing plates and napkins if your going to eat from a vendor because they will provide what is necessary.
  • Do pack light and have tons of fun!
