The Long Center will host the Solo Symphony presented by Forklift Danceworks Thursday July 12 through Saturday July 14. This performance will feature Music Director/Austin Symphony Conductor, Peter Bay, and is inspired by the “virtuosic movement of symphonic conducting.”
The symphony will include 13 live musicians and will feature original music by Graham Reynolds, an Austin based composer-bandleader who creates, performs and records music for film, theatre, dance and rock clubs and concert halls. Graham is the bandleader for the jazz-based Golden Arm Trio. The performance will showcase choreography by award- winning choreographer, Allison Orr, who works with a wide variety of people from trained dancers all the way to firefighters. Allison is the founder of Forklift Danceworks, which “Celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary by creating original performances inspired by the movement of everyday life.”

Allison’s intention for the Solo Symphony is to demonstrate Peter Bay’s skilled and unique conducting style, passion and deep love for music. Allison says, “Peter Bay is such a dynamic, engaged mover when he conducts. I am inspired by the way he works to become the music when he conducts. From a choreographic standpoint, his movement vocabulary is extraordinarily rich and complex. I hope this dance helps to tell a fuller story about Peter’s work and the world of conductors. I think this job is not well understood by many of us . . . so much of the work is hidden and behind the scenes.”
This performance is intriguing and I’m sure will prove to be beautiful, unique and something you have never seen before.
