Recap: 2nd Annual Swinging For Seany Golf Tournament

On Monday June 11, the Seany Foundation hosted its Second Annual “Swinging for Seany Golf Tournament” at the beautiful Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe. The event raised over $63,000 and had an impressive turnout, with more than 100 guests in attendance. Even a handful of NFL stars including Andre Reed, Kassim OsgoodTre McLeod, and Chris McAlister, came to support the cause.

The scramble golf tournament included contests like a hole in one, lowest team score and longest drive. The participants enjoyed a barbecue lunch and great weather during the all-day event. The day was concluded with cocktails, dinner, awards and an auction. A few of the auction items included a Charger’s jersey signed by Vincent Jackson, a set of Callaway RAZR X clubs and a VIP baseball weekend at Yankee Stadium.

The golf tournament is one of two large events that the Seany Foundation hosts each year to raise money for kids, teens and young adults who have cancer. Pediatric cancers are some of the most underfunded types of cancer. In comparison, breast cancer research receives annual funding of $300 million a year while research for all childhood cancers combined receives about $20-30 million a year. Not only does the foundation raise money for cancer research but funds are also used to improve the quality of life for the patients and their families, which is how the foundation was started in 2005.

The foundation was started by Sean Lewis Robins, whose family has kept the foundation thriving since he passed away in 2006 from a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Sean was an infinitely positive person, despite battling cancer for seven years, saying, “When nothing is certain, everything is possible.” Sean was the driving force behind the Seany Room, a room at Rady Children’s Hospital where other kids and teens battling cancer can go to get some normalcy. The room is a place designed with young people in mind, complete with games, music, crafts and brightly colored decor.

The Seany Foundation is committed continuing on Sean’s legacy and dedication to helping find a cure for cancer. Though he was only 22 when he passed away, he was wise beyond his years. A favorite quote of Sean’s by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.”
