Nail Trend 2012: Caviar (Microbead) Manicure

Animal-inspired manicures, especially of the animal-print variety have been hugely popular in recent times. And one current trend takes the animal-inspired nail to the next level by featuring none other than fish-eggs! The Caviar Manicure (also known as the microbead manicure) mimics the luxury food in that tiny microbeads are plastered to the nail to look like fish-eggs. Trust, it looks a lot more appetizing than it sounds as the beads can come in many colors for a feminine, three-dimensional effect.

To achieve the look, British nail care brand, Ciaté has created caviar manucure kits ($25.00 at Sephora) –Rainbow (multicolored), and Mother of Pearl (white), Black Pearls (black)– which include the “caviar pearls,” a thick nail polish for the beads to bind to on the nail, a catching bowl for fallout, and a mini funnel to place any fallen beads back into bottle for later use. Here is a step-by-step graphic on how to apply the caviar beads to nails:

Like any trend, you can make it your own by applying the beads to all of your nails or just one or two on each hand as an accent. For more color options (and a cheaper price tag), you can always visit your local craft store (i.e. Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.) to find microbead sets in other shades. You can also feature one solid color or mix different bead colors for a rainbow effect. Just be sure to use a nail polish of thick consistency that’s a similar (or complementary) color to the beads so they blend and stick optimally to the nail. For a longer lasting caviar mani and to minimize bead fallout, run a clear top coat just at the tips of each nail.
