Miss A Columnist

Shawna Nadelman is a Gemini vegetarian who enjoys long walks on the beach and curling up on the couch to take in the latest episode of, well anything on Bravo. The staff at Trader Joe’s (the Encinitas location) know her by name. She can spout off almost any celebrity’s dating history, refer to Friends episodes in daily conversation and would give anything to marry a man like Coach Eric Taylor (of Friday Night Lights). She’s never met a ruffle, oversized flower or horizontal stripe that she didn't love and though her entire wardrobe hails from J.Crew and Anthropologie, she'll never buy an item at full price (momma loves a good sale!). Sure, some may argue she's the whitest gal they know, but (surprise!) she's fluent in Spanish and left a part of her heart in Madrid, Spain after a summer abroad in college. Her family is her everything and she certainly does not deserve her friends. Left to her own devices, she could probably finish off a jar of peanut/almond butter in one sitting. She also loves to write. A lot. If you have a fashion designer, brand, store or website you would like covered on Miss A, please contact Shawna at shawnalnadelman@gmail.com.

Though the summer solstice isn’t technically until June 21st, with the passing of Memorial Day and the warmer temperatures the city has been boasting as of late, I think it’s safe to say that everyone’s beloved season is upon us. Which means a few things: 1) it’s really time to get serious about getting you body bikini ready, 2) it’s totally okay to wear white again, and 3) it’s time to prep your skin for all of the vitamin D it’s about to absorb while catching some UV rays at the beach!

Yes, skincare. The thing you were totally going to get around to making a priority but then the Real Houseswives of New Jersey marathon got in the way. But take it from someone who has had her fare share of dermis drama in the past, skincare is not to be taken lightly -especially with regards to its exposure to the sun. So when I want to ensure that my face is getting the TLC that it needs (and deserves!) especially throughout the summer months, I visit Dawn Nicholas at Just Skin, Inc. in Encinitas.

Located right off Saxony (right across the street from the YMCA), this medical spa is tucked away in a private business park, lending itself to ample parking. Once inside the office itself, patrons are immediately welcomed by a cheery receptionist before being led back to one of the private rooms for their treatment of choice. On my most recent visit to see Dawn, I was pleasantly surprised by the vast space of the facial room. I have been to many salons whose facilities are cramped, making the experience, to be honest, a bit claustrophobic, but at Just Skin, Inc., I was able to stretch out and truly make myself comfortable.

Now to know Dawn Nicholas, is to love Dawn Nicholas. Her sweet and calm demeanor make her the ideal candidate to administer a myriad of spa services. But it isn’t simply her charm that keeps me coming back (although that certainly helps!), it is also her genuine care and personal attention she gives to each of her clients. She customizes each facial to the needs of her client; if the appointment lasts 45-minutes or one hour and 45 minutes, the price remains the same. “There’s no sticker shock with me,” Dawn says, “If my client’s skincare requires me to spend a little extra time and to utilize a few extra treatments, then I’m happy to oblige and they don’t have to worry about the additional services adding up to an outrageous price tag!”

As someone who has always battled with her skin, I am so thankful that Dawn holds this professional philosophy. She has customized a series of services within my facial that leave my skin feeling refreshed and renewed. Perhaps my favorite technique that she employs is dermoplaning -a procedure in which dead skin cells and fine hair are carefully “shaved” off of your face, leaving it not only smooth, but free from the unwanted bacteria that normally hides out in dead skin and hair. It even allows for easier makeup application! Additionally, Dawn uses a series of cleanses and creams to ensure that, yes, even after those dreaded extractions, your skin is glowing and equipped to continue healing and improving as the week goes on. No red and blotchy faces here!

And if a facial is not what you desire, Just Skin, Inc. offers a cornucopia of both medical and non-medical spa services including microdermabrasion, eye brow grooming, laser hair removal, and non-surgical skin tightening treatments. The latter, perfect in time for bikini season! Just Skin, Inc. is also well-stocked with medical-grade products to assist you in maintaining that healthy glow well after your treatment is completed.

So invest in some shorts and don’t be afraid to don that tank top because with your skin looking healthy and fresh, compliments to Dawn Nicholas and the rest of the Just Skin, Inc. team, you can go into summer in San Diego confidently. Just remember that sunscreen!

Dawn is the best Esthetician I have ever been to. She is wonderful, and she really cares about her clients. One of the nicest people I have ever met.
