Located in LA’s downtown art district, Six01 Studio has produced and is hosting an 8 performance production of SAFE, running thru June 9th. Set in theatre in the round, or should I say square, the audience sits in a double row at the outside edge of the staged safe, not necessarily as mere bystanders, but plausibly as responsible party to the incessant psychosis of the 5 individuals that fuel this unfolding tragedy entitled SAFE, just by their shear inaction. The premise of the production is 5 individuals locked in a safe during a bank robbery, and while trapped in a vault expose their own absurdities, egotistical drives, fears, intent for self-preservation, and falsehoods under different guises – some conscious, some not. The play’s commentary moves beyond a cubed cell and the individuals locked within it. Rather, it seams to speak to our lack of humanity, compassion and even honesty with ourselves about our patterns, intents, roles we play and why. Co-written by Anthony Ruivivar and Tony Glazer and directed by Anthony Ruivivar, SAFE is a play rich in dialogue and emotion. The characters are believable and recognizable. And, the production is compelling and thought provoking.
SAFE stars Yvonne Jung (Third Watch), Monica Horan (Everybody Loves Raymond), Michael Beach (Sons of Anarchy), Sean Wing (90210) and Yul Spencer (The Shield) and is produced by a high-power team of mostly Six01 Studio founding members Yvonne Jung, Anthony Ruivivar, Jane McKidd, Maura Tierney, Louise Fancey-Mirren, and Simon Mirren. The stage set, aided by dramatic levels of light, is clever, simple and efficient. The costumes are understated, while expressive of character and societal roles.
SAFE first debuted Off-Broadway in 2003 to sold out houses with critical acclaim. It has since been produced in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Vancouver, and Sydney. Check out LA’s current production of SAFE at Six01 Studio, located at 601 S. Anderson Street, LA, CA 90023.
The space is open for rental and open 24/7 for theatre, exhibits, film and more. Proceeds from the theatre production of SAFE at Six01 Studio will benefit Inner City Arts, an “oasis of learning” for inner city kids on LA’s Skid Row. Kids who participate in the after school, school-day and summer programs at Inner City Arts are mentored by great artists and educators in all fields of the performing and fine arts. This arts organization not only provides programs for kids, but also for educators, parents, and the larger community.
