Gloria Ruth is the founder of Gloria Ruth Photography. Gloria began her career by shooting independent films and now she loves capturing weddings with the same dramatic style. She specializes in engagements, portraits, newborns, weddings and photography for websites.
What motivated you to become an entrepreneur?
Gloria: I kind of fell into it actually. I began my career by shooting independent films pro bono. By chance, I photographed a wedding for a friend and I was totally smitten. At that point, I became obsessed. I began researching everything I could find to help me perfect my craft, second shot weddings, attended workshops and was basically self-taught.
What is your favorite thing about being your own boss?
Gloria: Making my own decisions, whether creatively or logistically. I adore working with each couple that hires me. I don’t ever take for granted that a couple’s wedding is one of the most important days in their lives. I love the fact that my time isn’t limited with them, like it would be if I worked for someone else’s company.
What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?
Gloria: Finding a balance between work and my personal life. I am a perfectionist and tend to be a workaholic as well. I’m working on putting more time aside to relax and spend time with my family, friends, my chubby cat, and my amazing fiancé. An occasional beach day would be nice too!
What marketing tips can you recommend?
Gloria: For my business, the best form of advertisement has been through word of mouth recommendations (have I mentioned how awesome my clients are?!). Social media is also an amazing tool for garnering attention for your business without cost.
Who inspires you?
Gloria: My base of inspiration is God. It is my greatest joy to capture people in love, it’s God’s greatest gift to us. I’m inspired because we are merely reflections of Him and the beauty of this world is just a small reminder of His love. Every glimmer of light, laugh, smile and act of kindness is a small glimpse of the Almighty. I am truly grateful to be able to capture this.
What advice do you have for those who dream of opening their own business someday?
Gloria: Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t succeed. When it comes down to it, it’s not about them. It’s YOUR dream. You are the only one that can pursue it, achieve it and make it your own. You were made entirely unique and amazing – embrace it.
