Miss A Columnist

Allie Maltese never thought she would ever need anything besides cab fare and the Big Apple’s charm and excitement, but wanderlust snatched her heart and so she set out for the West Coast in search of a sunnier, more radiant life in San Diego. A graduate of New York’s Parson’s School of Design and The Fashion Institute of Technology, Alexandra is enchanted by the aesthetic of attire. During college, she worked in the beauty and style closets at such celebrated publications as: O, The Oprah Magazine, O at Home, Seventeen and Star Magazines. Since then, she has worked in public relations in the jewelry, fashion, and tech industries.
Some of her favorite things include: anything and everything beauty and fashion related, pretty product packaging, thrift/vintage store shopping, rooftops, writing, traveling, discovering amazing restaurants and designer finds, champagne, hot yoga, laughing (and making people laugh) and cuddling with her French Bulldog, Ruby. Allie recently launched her own blog with her best friend, www.haute-girls.com, where they'll explore what it's like living on opposite coasts and report the latest fashion, beauty and lifestyle trends. If you have a San Diego charity or cultural event, restaurant, boutique, spa, or salon you would like covered on Miss A, please contact Allie at allie.maltese@gmail.com. Spa Velia In Downtown San Diego

The word Velia is of Italian origin and simply translates to “concealed,” which is no surprise since it’s nestled between the Columbia/Little Italy Districts of downtown San Diego. Spa Velia provides an old-world atmosphere in the midst of the bustling city and boosts pure relaxation the moment you walk through the doors. They draw inspiration from all over the globe to provide their guests with the best organic spa experience possible.

I’ve been to this spa twice; once for a facial and the other for a massage, and both times I was transcended into another world. A welcomed escape from my busy lifestyle. Spa Velia provides the right amount of ambiance and calm, and I highly recommend arriving early  so you can enjoy all of the amenities offered.  If you’re looking for a good steam, this is your place. It allows you to invigorate your senses and detox your mind and body all at the same time. It’s simply divine! Plus, the bathrooms are fully equipped with Swiss showers, where three different shower water spouts are coming at you at full speed, devouring your body (in a good way!). After a nice steam or shower, guests are invited to unwind in the intimate lounge with a good book, a seasonal mimosa, fruit infused water, or a cup of tea.

I received the Vitality Peel which is a hydroxy acid treatment that rewards the skin by smoothing texture, fading pigmentation and clearing acne. It uses a selection of acid blends available to precisely customize to all skin types. The treatment continues with a soothing cucumber gel and a vitamin rich hydrating mask and concludes with the application of a silky sheer water resistant spf 50. A week after this facial, by skin was smooth and glowing.

On my second visit to Spa Velia, my husband and I enjoyed a couples massage. It was a traditional massage that hit all the right spots and infused essential oils to calm my senses. During my treatment, I was worlds away.

Spa Velia also cares about our Planet.  They employ sustainable practices and use only the purest organic ingredients in our products. As an eco conscious member of the Green Spa Network, Spa Velia is located in San Diego’s #1 Gold LEED Certified Building, Columbia Center.
