Just over a year to the day (April 29, 2011), Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his bride, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, tied the royal knot in Westminster Abbey. An audience of two billion awed at the Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown Kate worn for the couple’s big day and since then, she has not let us down in the fashion department. Since becoming a public figure, Kate has been on countless Best Dressed lists donning flattering, elegant and accessible fashions (that she’s not ashamed to be pictured wearing more than once) that women around the world love her for and can relate to.
Kate is well on her way to becoming an (style) icon not only for her envy-worthy figure, gorgeous face and perfect hair, but for her humanitarian efforts and down-to-earth demeanor. The former Ms. Middleton has graced every red carpet and cobblestone she has walked upon with her style. So in honor of the royal couple’s recent wedding anniversary, here are 10 of Kate’s most memorable fashion moments from the first year of wedded bliss.
ALL THAT GLITTERS
While attending her first official function as a royal, the Duchess looked stunning and fashionable in a blush-colored Jenny Packham Spring 2011 silver sequin-detailed gown at the 10th Annual Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) gala dinner in London (June 9, 2011). And to finish the look, she wore nude LK Bennett Agata Oversized Bow Sandals.
To celebrate Prince Phillip‘s 90th birthday at Windsor Chapel’s St. George’s Chapel on June 12 of last year, Kate revamped this periwinkle blue Jane Troughton brocade coat featuring five buttons on the accented waistband (she wore it for a friend’s wedding in 2009) and a blue pleated Zara dress (she wore when leaving for her honeymoon by helicopter). She topped off the look with a navy Jane Corbett fascinator headpiece, LK Bennett nude pumps and an oversized nude clutch.
During the British couple’s 11-day tour of North America, Kate wore white with red accents in honor of Canada Day at the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec on July 1, 2011. The beauty re-wore her cream Reiss dress (seen before in her engagement photos) and accessorized with a custom-made red leafy hat by Sylvia Fletcher at Lock & Co (she wasn’t named “Hat Person of the Year” for nothing!), a maple brooch borrowed from the Queen, an Anya Hindmarch fan clutch and lipstick-red heels.
Not one to be afraid of color or print, Catherine looked chic yet fun while combining the two on July 8, 2011. She wore this emerald green “Maja” Diane Von Furstenburg silk dress for the U.S. welcome reception at the British Consul-General’s residence in Hancock Park (Los Angeles). She tastefully showed her wild side by sporting a leopard-print purse also from Von Furstenburg. (She wore the famous dress again days later on July 29, 2011, for her husband’s cousin’s Zara Phillips‘ wedding).
FIT FOR A MCQUEEN
Showing us how the royals do it, Duchess Catherine stood out amongst the Hollywood crowd in a waist-hugging, pleated lilac Alexander McQueen gown while attending the July 9, 2011, BAFTA Brits to Watch gala in LA. She accompanied the frock with Jimmy Choo Vamp glitter sandals, a clutch also from Jimmy Choo, and earrings borrowed from Her Majesty the Queen. For her first time in the States, she certainly needed no help fashion-wise.
LADY IN RED
Along with her prince of a husband, Kate was a guest of honor at the 100 Women in Hedge Funds gala at St. James’s Palace (October 13, 2011) where she helped raise more than $1 million (£675,000) for the Child Bereavement Charity. At the event, she wore a red silk jersey maxi dress with plunging neckline and chiffon sleeves (Sarai gown) by Beulah London. She completed the look with Wilbur and Gussie’s gold glittery envelope clutch and soft curls.
DUCHESS OR GODDESS?
Adjusting to her role as the Duchess of Cambridge with ease, Kate stepped in for her father-in-law, Prince Charles, to host a charity dinner for In Kind Direct at Clarence House on October 26, 2011 – her first solo engagement. She adorned her flawless figure in a Grecian-inspired vintage Amanda Wakeley gown featuring rhinestones on criss-crossing straps, an empire waist and godet skirt. As always, her jewelry was simple – drop earrings, a diamond bracelet and, of course, her beautiful sapphire engagement ring.
BLACK LACE NEVER LOOKED SO REGAL
Kate looked astonishing in the black lace floor-length Alice Temperley gown she wore on January 8 of this year, the eve of her 30th birthday, at the War Horse London movie premiere/The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry event. The cream-based lacey dress featured floral-embroidery, dropped waist detailing, a plunging v-neck, and a keyhole back. She kept accessories minimal with drop diamond earrings, her signature diamond bracelet, and a black velvet clutch from Mascaro. Who says you can’t be royal and sexy?
GREEN WITH FASHION
In festive spirits, the Duchess of Cambridge wore traditional green on March 17, 2012, during her first solo military engagement. Kate presented shamrocks to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Aldershot, England, while looking regal and feminine in a belted Emilia Wickstead knee-length coat dress. For accessories, she wore a Lock & Co Betty Boop pillbox hat, brown suede pumps, a gold clover brooch formerly worn by the late Queen Mother and a sprig of shamrock.
JEWELS & RUFFLES
Just days before her one-year wedding anniversary, April 25, 2012, at the London premiere of African Cats, Kate wore a gray knee-length peplum Matthew Williamson dress finished with three-quarter-length sleeves and turquoise beading around the neck and sleeves. She accessorized with dark green suede pumps and a clutch. Her chocolate tresses were as voluminous and full as ever.
