Miss A Columnist

The product of a childhood raised on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest, Erin Miller's country sensibilities bring a dose of humor and imagination to her writings. At 11 Erin was awarded the Blue Ribbon for her chicken, Abigail, at the Jefferson County Fair giving her an early taste and penchant for fame, notoriety and the finer things in life.
Formerly a freelance writer for Daily Candy, Seattle; Erin makes it her mission to unearth a city’s best kept secrets to keep her readers in the know. Her industry experience has run the gammit from wedding planning, fashion, music (she dated the lead singer of a band for a minute) and nonprofits.
Now an event planner and marketing professional Erin spends her free time contributing to causes she loves, searching for a decent cup of coffee and catching up on 22 years of vitamin D depletion. She has a keen eye for kitsch (and crap) and can’t resist a good deal. She loves kids and puppies and while she has none of her own, she IS the proud owner of too many dresses and not enough pairs of pants.

Kids Cooking Classes With The Balanced Palate In San Diego

There is a daily food fight going on at kitchen tables across America. Trying to get your kids to make healthy food choices can be an endless battle but luckily help is on the way with “Flour Children” cooking classes offered by The Balanced Palate. Kids ages 5 and up are welcome to play and eat while they learn healthy and delicious recipes that can easily be duplicated at home.

The instructor, Jamie Weisman, is a blogger and foodie who has taught children’s cooking classes both in Chicago and most recently at The Cooking School in La Jolla. Weisman’s philosophy is to teach children that what is good for the earth is also good for them and keeping a balance in their diet and life can not only bring them joy as children but help them grow into healthier adults. Weisman hopes that through
her classes she can combat the mixed messages we get from the media on what’s healthy and let kids know from an early age the foods that are truly good for them.

Finding healthy food that your kids will enjoy doesn’t have to be hard. Weisman recipes are easy on the belly and the palate. Past classes cooked yummy foods like; raw granola bars, banana ice cream, parfaits, dips and spring rolls. Is your kid a tough nut to crack? Even the most particular eaters will try something new in this fun and creative class. According to Weisman when a child is involved in the preperation of what they are eating they are liklier to try something they normally wouldn’t.

The cooking class begins by introducing each of the ingredients used in the classes’ recipes, a history on where the ingredients came from and their nutritional value.  These hands-on classes can build a child’s cooking confidence while also emphasizing the value of sustainable, local, organic food and holistic living.

Moms and dads who are guilty of falling into the macaroni and cheese routine can also check out Weisman’s cooking blog for tasty recipes to keep their brood happy and healthy.

The next Flour Child cooking class is April 21st at  11 a.m. at the Peoples Market in Ocean Beach. To reserve a spot, see upcoming class dates and location, and to get your flour child singing Peace, Love and Broccoli email jamie@balancedpalate.com.
