Into the Real is the perfect name for this jazz and folk-influenced Chicago band. Their music is heartfelt, authentic music about love and spirituality. The weighty subjects are tempered with a light, folk-rock melodic sound. Into the Real is the real thing in the Chicago music scene.
The Wheaton-based band was started two years ago by Dan Smolla, who is the chief songwriter. Smolla’s lyrics are influenced by his spirtuality. He and lead singer Juliana Cesano not only sing and write songs about helping others, they help others through non-profit work devoted to interfaith peace. Smolla’s music is influence by rock legends Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and the Band. The band’s music comes alive though the vocals of Cesano. Her soothing voice is similar to Natalie Merchant . The music is tinged with a South American/Latin music vibe, no doubt influenced by Cesano’s Argentinian upbringing. Steve Hashimoto‘s excellent bass playing and Fred Reich’s precision drumming give Into the Real its distinctive sound on songs such as ” Gaia” and ” Love is Not an Idea”.
