KaRu Salon in Austin

February, the most romantic month of the year, is almost over but before it ends, I wanted to share a salon I found just off busy 38th and a half street street.  KaRu Salon, named by husband and wife team Rudolph and Kari Leon-Guerrero, hence the “Ka” and “Ru” was founded by the two in 2010.  The name not only symbolizes the strong bond Rudolf and Kari share, but karu actually means “to cut” in Japanese, which the couple didn’t know until after naming the salon.

When I visited the salon, it was unlike most salons I’ve experienced.  The atmosphere was warm and calming like a comfortable, chic home.  The couple wants their customers to “stay awhile” and really get away from the busy world while they visit and relax at KaRu.  In fact, Rudolf and Kari explained that one of the first things they did after they purchased the space was change the fluorescent lighting to more subtle lighting; they also insulated the space to reduce echos and other unpleasant sounds that are present in most salons.

The salon is based on a set of values held by the entire team  including integrity, passion and positivity.  Honest and sincere professionalism, devotion and a commitment to their calling and maintaining an optimistic attitude are all cornerstone the entire staff lives and works by at KaRu Salon.

Rudolph and Kari are very much in love and that energy was evident as I got to know the couple as we sat in the warm, sunlit space surrounded by fresh flowers and beautiful upholstered chairs and sofas. Rudolph and Kari both offer years of experience and specialties of their own to their clients.  Most couples would not be able to work together and maintain a healthy marriage, but Rudolph and Kari have it mastered.  I asked what some of their secrets are to successfully owning a business together and remaining happily married and some of the answers included mini vacations together, one long vacation together annually, planned date nights and the couple agrees to cease talking about work at a certain time each day in order to refresh and really enjoy each other to the fullest.

KaRu offers many services including color, cuts, blowouts, special occasion hair and Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment.  The team of stylists at KaRu offer years of experience and a saturated talent.  Rudolph claims, “Our stylists’ thorough consultations incorporate lifestyle, personality and physical characteristics to create a look to compliment one’s individuality.”  Rudolph went on to say that when it comes to hiring stylists, he and Kari focus on “hiring personalities” along with skill sets because so much in this industry is based on relationships as is in life.  The KaRu stylists engage in ongoing, advanced training and stay on top of all the latest trends and fashions, but the KaRu team will adjust the styles to each individual person, not the other way around; individuality reigns at KaRu!

KaRu supports battered women in Austin by offering free services to uplift their spirits and help build confidence among other charitable causes.

Together Rudolph and Kari make a dynamic team “who have created an environment where guests experience an awakening of the body and spirit, restoring the balance of inner and outer beauty.”
