The DVF Awards were created in 2010 by Diane von Furstenberg and The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation to recognize and support women who are using their resources, commitment and visibility to transform the lives of other women. One of these five awards, the People’s Voice Award, is chosen by popular vote from four nominees presented at dvfawards.com. Honorees receive $50,000 from The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation to further the work of the non-profit organization with which they are affiliated.
Inspired by the tragic loss of a friend while travelling abroad, Andrea Powell co-founded FAIR Girls, formerly known as FAIR Fund, and currently serves as the Executive Director. FAIR Girls, a Washington, D.C. area non-profit, helps more than 200 girls every year overcome abuse, sex trafficking and forced labor. The organization offers counseling, art therapy, job training, and a safe place where teen girls can get help and have the chance to live happy, healthy, and empowered lives.
FAIR stands for “Free, Aware, Inspired, and Restored,” and that is exactly what Andrea hopes each girl she supports will become. FAIR Girls partners with a diverse network of anti-trafficking, girls empowerment, and youth services agencies. They also collaborate with governmental task forces, city and state child welfare agencies, and a number of direct service and educational associations. In the Washington D.C. Metro Area FAIR Girls has targeted partnerships with agencies that provide shelter, medical, legal, and other support to high risk and trafficked girls aged 11 to 21.
Vote for Andrea Powell for the People’s Voice Award.
