For the last 28 years, the annual St. Valentine’s Day Luncheon has been a tradition here in Dallas. Pulling together civic and social leaders from Dallas and the entire North Texas region to celebrate the best in fashion and raise much needed funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This year’s co-chairs are Bunny Cotten, Angela Nash, and Kristina Whitcomb.
The theme for this year’s St. Valentine’s Day luncheon will be “Heart & Sole” and the featured designer will be Chadwick Bell, who will be in attendance. Jack A. Turpin will be the honorary chair, and the Lynda Adleta Heart of Gold Award will be presented to former Dallas Maverick Ray Johnston, Jr., who has heroically battled and beaten leukemia four times. The Spirit of Tom Landry Character Award honoring a youth who has battled blood cancer or supported the fight against the disease, will be presented by Alicia Landry to two individuals, Kenedy Kundysek and Dalton Douglas.
This “must-attend” event is popular not only in the social community but also with members of the area’s fashion industry, as it is the first runway show of the new season on the calendar each year. Designers in attendance have included Bill Blass, Christian Louboutin, Mark Badgley & James Mischka, Loree Rodkin, Rodarte, and Brian Reyes. Local “stars” who have walked the runway include Angie Harmon, Janine Turner, and members of the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and the Dallas Stars. Local media celebrities have also participated in the shows, and the Luncheon receives extensive coverage in print and on air. In 2009, Robin McGraw came in from LA for the show. The 2012 Luncheon is expected to raise more than $450,000, adding to nearly $7 million generated over the past two decades. Funds are raised not only through table and ticket sales but also through a raffle of high-end items retailing anywhere from $500 to $10,000.
