Review Of Memphis At Atlanta’s Fox Theatre

The four-time Tony Award winning musical Memphis has opened in Atlanta. This is a wonderful show that lets you experience the birth of R&B in mainstream “white” Memphis. Audience members of all ages enjoy the sounds and movement that make everyone’s head bob, toes tap, and hands move to the beats.

Memphis starts by taking the audience into the underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where an odd and inspiring wanna-be white DJ named Huey Calhoun discovers “the music of his soul”. Each character gives you a look at the history of our cultural revolution.  Taking you on a journey in the eyes of this one small-town young man that falls for everything he shouldn’t. Audience members will go on a ride of emotions from laughter, fear, happiness, and sadness.

The song “Music of my Soul” was the first song written by David Bryan, and remains largely unchanged from its first version nine years ago. You will get to know and love this song, and will be singing it for days to come. David Bryan is one of the founding members and keyboardist from Bon Jovi. He collaborated on the music with Joe DiPietro, from ‘I love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’.

The national tour of Memphis brings two ensemble cast members “home”. Christopher Gurr of Americus and Jody Reynard of Austell, have the opportunity to come back to their roots in their performances as Mr. Simmons and Gator. Giving them a warm southern welcome home, they join a wonderful cast of a show you cannot help but love. The story moves you with the different emotions, and gives you a real life perspective of how far we have come and how far we have to go for love and equality.
