Miss A Columnist

Melissa Curtin covers charity and style related events and loves to cover LA's best in beauty, fashion, and culture. She is an educator who recently returned to the classroom to motivate and inspire third graders at a private school in Pacific Palisades. In 2012, she launched an educational T-shirt line called Wear2learn. When she is not working out, hiking a canyon, or at the beach, she is writing. Her latest dream come true has been travel writing for Johnny Jet.

After teaching in the Maryland public school system for almost a decade, she left the conservative East Coast environment in Washington, DC for West Coast living. Eager for adventure, inner growth, and a new environment, she packed her car and took to the open road on her own landing in her new home - Hollywood, California. As a Connecticut Yankee at heart, she has now lived in Los Angeles for six years surrounded by the stars.

Melissa graduated from Gettysburg College with a double major in psychology and art history. Soon after, she earned a Master's Degree in education. Melissa traveled around the world on Semester at Sea, and earned a Fulbright Scholarship which enabled her to teach in England. A lust for travel and learning has fueled her globe trotting ever since. Some of her favorite destinations are Costa Rica, Thailand, Fiji, Morocco, Vietnam, Belgium, Italy, Sicily, Prague, Egypt, Australia, Greece, and Paris.

Los Angeles has won over her heart. She is constantly taking advantage of what LA LA Land has to offer - new boutiques and restaurants, finding great deals, discovering new hikes and beaches, music, and West Coast fashion.

Lavish Tan: An Organic Odorless Natural Looking Spray Tan

Tanning. If I could give advice to my old self, it would be to not spend every second on the beach as a youngster without sunscreen or sunglasses on.  I’d also like to tell my college self NOT to go to tanning beds. I can’t believe what we sorority girls use to do in college – to keep our glow many of us were going 2-3 times a week to tanning beds. Wrinkles and cancer. I don’t want that. I wish I had known better. If you have not seen this video yet, it will make you think twice about your time spent in the sun without protection. In LA, most people still want to look healthy with a glow.  Even though it is sunny here most of the year, many people frequently get sunless spray tans. They often make you look better, especially in a bathing suit and most celebs get them before big events because they really do enhance your overall appearance.  But, how gross do you smell after going in the typical spray tan booth or after a personal spray tan? So gross you can’t be around a boyfriend a day or more after, unless he can stand sleeping next to you.

Recently, I met Alexandra Dexter and Kelsey Jones who started Lavish Tan, an organic airbrush salon. One of the owners, Kelsey Jones had skin cancer at an early age. She still wanted to look good and be tan.  She was tired of the way all the other spray tanning salons made her look in LA. She didn’t want to look orange or look like she had a spray tan, so she worked with a chemist from Neutrogena to create this miracle odorless solution that looks real. I can attest to this natural glow since I received many compliments.

Their product works like the sugar of an apple, so just like an apple when it sits out, it starts to brown. This brown-sugar based solution guarantees flawless, golden brown results that last anywhere from 7-12 days.  Their product is not made from chemicals like almost all spray tanning salons, which is not good for you to breathe in or put on your skin.

What is even cooler is that you can buy their own products to use at home. For $45 you can give yourself a 360 degree mist in the comfort of your own home.  The aerosol spray can includes a 99% organic solution made from brown sugar naturally derived from apples and combined with anti-aging ingredients, aloe, CoQ10, and vitamins.  You can even buy the tanning system for your own home as well as the solution, and even neat things to add to the solution, like fragrance drops or shimmer drops.

This gorgeous little private spray tan place can be found in Venice, CA right on the second floor of 1636 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Hopefully, they will be opening a location near Hollywood soon. What’s neat is their space is next to a bunch of other small shops – one for eyebrows, one for hair, one for facials, so it is like a one-stop beauty shop all on the same floor. Don’t forget to wear loose dark clothing to wear home and some tiny undies to get sprayed in. Look healthy the safe way!
