Miss A Columnist

Natalie is a 20-something senior at Michigan State University. When she isn't saving up for her next plane ticket to some new destination, she can be found obsessing over films, TV shows, music, and books. She tries to follow Thoreau's words, "How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live," and plans to follow it for the rest of her life. One day you'll find her novel at your nearest bookstore, but for now she likes to use her writing to persuade people to watch what she watches, read what she reads, and listen to what she listens to.

Review Of Blonde Album By Coeur de Pirate

Beatrice Martin, known by her stage name “Coeur de Pirate” (meaning, “heart of a pirate”), is a 22-year-old singer from Quebec, Canada. Naturally, most of her songs are sung in French, but she is indeed bilingual. This is why her music is so impressive; she gives a whole new meaning to the word “overachiever”. It’s hard enough perfecting songs in English, but taking on a second language seems overwhelming. The petite blonde makes it all look so easy, though.

Her latest album, actually called “Blonde”, is even better than her previous work. I don’t even mind that it’s in French, because it’s just so pleasant to listen to! It’s the perfect type of music to listen to while you’re doing work, because it’s upbeat, but you’re not distracted by the lyrics since you can’t understand them! (Unless you speak French…then you might have a problem).

“Adieu”, one of the more popular songs on the album, has an upbeat, yet edgy feel to it. It has a sort of rebellious sound to it that’s hard for me to analyze, since I speak no French at all. One of my favorite tracks is “Golden Baby”, which I can only assume describes Beatrice herself in some way. She does look like a golden baby, doesn’t she? Either way, It’s a fun song to sing along to (and by “sing”, I really mean “hum” because trying to sing in French just ends in really bad results). I get especially excited when I hear the words “golden baby”, seeing as they’re the only words I understand in the song.

In all honesty, you don’t need to understand a word of French to enjoy Coeur de Pirate and her beautiful songs. I actually want to learn French after discovering her music. So if you’re looking for something fun and foreign, “Blonde” is the perfect album to listen to. You will definitely not be sorry you took the time to look Beatrice up, and your ears will be so happy that you did.
