Creative Ways to Celebrate Christmas with Children In San Diego

Although Christmas Day is only a few days away there is still time to fit in some holiday-cheer events with the kids before the big day arrives.  Consider these options to truly feel the season’s spirit!

The San Diego Botanic Garden is located in Encinitas and this time of year they feature the Garden of Lights.  The gardens have a beautiful display of lights and fun activities for the whole family now until December 23 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m and again from December 26 through the 30th.  Live entertainment is featured each night and there is a firepit for marshmellow roasting, horse-drawn wagon rides and even “snow” on select evenings. The Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater in Balboa Park is featuring a holiday-themed puppet show December 20 through 26 (except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).  Santa cannot find the toys he needs to deliver for Christmas so Benito Bunny comes to the rescue in Benito Bunny’s Great Christmas Adventure.  Admission price is $3.00 for children (over two-years-old) and $4.00 for adults.  Check the theater’s website for show times.

Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe tells the story of Christ’s birth with a Living Nativity featuring actors and props.  In addition to the ongoing performance there is also an ice skating rink, camel rides and a petting zoo.  The next two nights available are December 22 and 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Check out Horizon’s website for more info on this event that showcases the reason for the season.

Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo is offering lots of festive activities now through December 23 and again from December 25 through January 1st. Exhibits include lighted animal figures, bell ringers, a nightly tree-lighting ceremony and a performance of “The Night Before Christmas.
