The story of Irene is one that every child, young or old can enjoy. As you and your children read along with Streep, you will get whisked away to a snow blizzard as Irene braves the wind and snow to deliver her mother’s, Mrs. Bobbin’s, amazingly crafted ball gown to the duchess at the faraway palace. On this adventure, Irene battles with the wind, who tells her, “Irene…go hooooooome…” But Irene refuses to give up. She has a mission and she’s not going to quit. Irene’s lesson is not only one for the youngsters, but adults sharing this story with them will be reminded of the tenacity it takes to succeed in life.

The best part about having the accompanying CD is that those fledgling readers of yours can follow along as they learn new words to get a great sense of context as Streep brings passion to Steig’s classic words.  To help with this, there are two versions of the story recorded on the CD. The latter one is a read along track, giving children cues as to when it’s time to turn the page.

Steig not only authored the book, but he also created all of the illustrations. In fact, he began his career drawing for The New Yorker in 1930, which catapulted him into publishing children’s books. There is a timeless and unique quality to his illustrations, one that parents can get nostalgic about, while children become captivated by the vividness of his depictions he created for Brave Irene.

Ultimately, Brave Irene written and illustrated by William Steig, and read by Meryl Streep is a must have for any child’s personal library. It is a book that your youngster can grow into, and before you know it they will be excitedly reading it to you.
