Miss A Columnist

Shawna Nadelman is a Gemini vegetarian who enjoys long walks on the beach and curling up on the couch to take in the latest episode of, well anything on Bravo. The staff at Trader Joe’s (the Encinitas location) know her by name. She can spout off almost any celebrity’s dating history, refer to Friends episodes in daily conversation and would give anything to marry a man like Coach Eric Taylor (of Friday Night Lights). She’s never met a ruffle, oversized flower or horizontal stripe that she didn't love and though her entire wardrobe hails from J.Crew and Anthropologie, she'll never buy an item at full price (momma loves a good sale!). Sure, some may argue she's the whitest gal they know, but (surprise!) she's fluent in Spanish and left a part of her heart in Madrid, Spain after a summer abroad in college. Her family is her everything and she certainly does not deserve her friends. Left to her own devices, she could probably finish off a jar of peanut/almond butter in one sitting.

But just minutes from Downtown San Diego, the quaint area of Seaport Village certainly fits the bill. This time of year, why risk being trampled, or worse, pepper-sprayed at the local mall? Save your eyes and your sanity by forgoing the chain stores in exchange for your humble Mom & Pop shops! Of the more than 30 stores in this off-the-beaten-path village nestled beside the San Diego harbor, here are few that might be home to that perfect last-minute and one-of-a-kind gift you’ve been searching for:

Alamo Flag: a flag shop specializing in international and American flags, perfect for the traveler or patriot in your life.

For Bare Feet: warm up your little piggies with a pair of novelty socks from this fun sock shop (socks make great stocking stuffers!).

Hot Licks: just as its name implies, this shop features hot sauces, salsas and other spicy foods well-suited for the adventurous eater in your family.

The Mugger: this boutique boasts “the world’s largest selection of mugs” and would be a great last-minute stop before your office holiday party -because who couldn’t use another cup for their morning coffee?

Mystic Mermaid: for the lady in your life who seems to have everything, this store offers a variety of unusual and unique apparel, accessories, purses and scarves.
