The first time I walked into Studio Downtown I remember thinking “This is my kind of shop.” All of the products are beautiful and displayed excellently throughout the store. But the array of work is really what makes it a prime place to spend a day. Candles, belts, hats, apparel, stationary and original art are all sold and showcased throughout. All told, over ten local designers feature there work and many frequent the shop to talk to patrons, especially during events.
Paige Nelson Murphy, the owner, started this downtown gem when Kandy Glass, owner
of FaceKandy, approached her with the idea. They recognized a lack of a “cosmetic presence” in Austin’s downtown area and wanted to remedy it. Paige had previously had a lot of experience working in the fashion world of New York and LA. But she believes in showcasing the talent right here in Texas. “We have so much talent in our own city that we don’t need to look anywhere but here for emerging and established design talent.” The store features local designers of different backgrounds including some that you would be unlikely to find anywhere outside of Austin. Some of these talented artists are: Milli Starr, Simmang Design, Jordan Loves James, Glass Axes, Victrola, Baby Bolt and Purple Paisley Candles.
Perhaps what really sets this boutique apart are the events they host. They are always ready to schedule private parties and can be open by individual appointments, but also hold events open to the public. I have had the pleasure of going to one of their “Fascinator Fridays” a fantastic event which encourages all party-goers to try on one of Milli Starr’s creations. And this is not the only event that happens on a regular basis at the location. On December 4th they will be hosting Holiday in the Courtyard. Stop by for cocktails, live music and a place to find the perfect present for anyone on your list. The charity beneficiary this weekend will be Capital Area Food Bank and non-perishable food donations will be accepted. Don’t worry, if the weather is bad, the rain date is December 18th and there will be another Courtyard event in January. Vendors can also apply to be a part of the event itself by contacting Paigemurp@aol.com.
