The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center In Balboa Park

I’m always on a quest for new and interesting ways to entertain my now 15-month-old.  If a little education is thrown in all the better!  On a recent trip to Balboa Park I decided to check out the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center as something for us to do.  Turns out, even toddlers can benefit from what this science museum has to offer.  In addition to their many exhibits on science, the environment and their excellent IMAX films, the center offers Kid City, an exhibit specifically geared to children under the age of five.  Within this exhibit is truly a “city” complete with a grocery store, factory and fire station.

My son’s fascination with balls was quickly met in the City as he simply walked around picking up as many as he could find.  And what joy to discover the “ball wall” where he could put a ball in an air-filled tube to see it zip up and be propelled out of the top!  This mechanism created a solid twenty minutes of fun…an eternity in toddler world.  Also in Kid City there is a computer station and small “gym” for active little ones.  The Reuben H. Science Center has plenty to offer older children and adults.  The current exhibits include the Geometry Playground, So Watt! a look at energy and Aging for All Ages, an interesting look at wellness and healthy lifestyle choices.  If you are fortunate to take your little one with another adult, take turns in Kid City and explore the other activities all while learning a little something along the way.  A wonderful museum in beautiful Balboa Park makes for an excellent outing with children of all ages.
