The LGBT Center Hosts 14th Annual Women’s Event Honoring Wanda Sykes At Chelsea Piers’ Pier Sixty

On Saturday, November 12th, 2011, join The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center as they celebrate their 14th Annual Women’s Event at Chelsea Piers’ Pier Sixty.  Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, this event will help to fund the Center’s diverse array of programs and services for lesbians, bisexual women and transgender people.

This year’s gala will honor several distinguished women, including: out comedienne and actress Wanda Sykes receiving the Celebrity Activist Award; first openly gay performer in country music Chely Wright receiving the Community Award; and corporate diversity leaders of pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim USA, Maria Persky and Nancy Di Dia, receiving the Corporate Leader Award.  As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Wanda Sykes will be presented her award by none other than Cyndi Lauper!

Along with the honorees, Women’s Event 14 will unite leaders from the business, cultural and civic arenas in the tri-state area for a fabulous evening that includes a cocktail hour, dinner and awards program, silent auction, dessert, and dancing.

The LGBT Center is open 365 days a year, and is home to more than 300,000 visitors a year.  Run by a caring staff and passionate volunteers, the 14th Annual Women’s Event is a fantastic way to help support all the amazing programs offered by the Center. The programs that will be supported thanks to the gala include: parents-to-be programs in Center Families, young women’s groups in the Youth Enrichment Services, counseling and cancer education through the Lesbian Cancer Initiative, and year-round performances and discussions by women authors, artists, entertainers and leaders in the LGBT community.

Executive Director of the Center, Glennda Testone, summarizes the Center’s impact on the LGBT community best: “People walk in here struggling with issues, feeling isolated, lacking community connection, and they walk out of here feeling better.  That’s what happens on a daily basis.  We help people live better lives.  That’s what the Center does.  For some people, it is the first place that they can come and feel completely safe and comfortable to be all of who they are.”  Indeed, Center user and breast cancer survivor D. Jeep Ries agrees, “I didn’t have to explain having a wife, I didn’t have to explain wearing a bow tie, I could just be myself…I’m just very, very grateful for the Center, and what I’ve been given and what I’m able to give back now.”

We hope to see you at the 14th Annual Women’s Event!  If you can’t make the gala but are available for an evening of dancing (and open bar and dessert!), we’d love to see you at the After Party!  Stay tuned for a post-event article, complete with photos and interviews documenting the evening’s festivities!
